Theres a youtube vid called "The Safest Place on Earth" that deals with the same issue - it seems to agree with you on the Himalayas choice, there are also a few other suggestions such as machu picchu, now wouldnt that be ironic.

Believe me, I'm not out on the 2012 theory at all but I'm pretty sure its not the end of the world according to the Mayans, just the end of that era, a start of a new calender.
Some wacko scientists predict many horrible things will happen on that day, but only a handful of them are believable. However, if they were to happen I doubt there are any safe places to be, except maybe a fairly high altitude underground bunker. If all hell breaks lose the poles will reverse and if we don't die instantly one of the worse ways to die would be the 30,000+ ft. high wave that will probably sweep the entire globe. That's one of the least likely scenarios, but there doesn't seem to be any place totally safe. It might be safe from one event but at risk to another, especially earthquakes which can access anything if they are triggered.
I think the most realistic possibility is the chance of the super volcano under Yellowstone exploding. This would kill anyone within a few hundred mile radius, but the affects would hit hard everywhere. All of north america will experience the affects of serious ash and it will cover up the sun for weeks, maybe months across most of the globe. I think if this was to happen as horrifying as it can be, nobody would survive.
obviously the safest place is south africa. no fault lines, stable climate, high ground etc. next best places would be tibet and inca plateau. north america is certainly the most dangerous place to be. no valleys or flat ground because of the flood - not only tidal waves but also deluge. no mountain peaks or slopes either but high plateaus. either bunkers or even better - natural caves. it's a common sense

If you hear something bad is going to happen, get yourself a plane ticket to DIA Denver International Airport. Actually the Yellowstone eruption was severally down played in the 2012 movie. If there are no mega-tsunamis to wash it out of the skies, the ash cloud will cover most of the North American continent. And since America produces 30% of the world's food supply, that means MASSIVE famine everywhere. And a Volcanic winter to boot, even Africa and the rest of the equator will be covered in frost for years to come. This will no doubt take out 80% of the world's population at least.

Bennewitz had stopped his schooling when he had nearly received a Ph.D. in physics. Instead, he focused his energies towards Thunder Scientific Corporation, a company which manufactured high-altitude testing equipment mostly for use at Kirtland Air Force Base.
For many years, Bennewitz had been interested in UFOs, and had conducted his own investigations into the subject. He became convinced that the so-called Cattle mutilations were due to aliens after he met Myrna Hansen, who was hypnotized by University of Wyoming psychologist R. Leo Sprinkle. Under hypnosis, Hansen offered a detailed account of being kidnapped by aliens and taken to an underground base in what she thought was New Mexico. There, Hansen says, she saw many liquid-filled vats containing portions of cattle and human remains. (Bennewitz would later accuse Sprinkle of being a CIA agent, and have nothing more to do with him).
Based on this and other evidence, Bennewitz claimed to have uncovered the fact that aliens were controlling humans through electromagnetic devices, and furthermore claimed that UFOs were regularly flying near Kirtland and the nearby Manzano Nuclear Weapons Storage Facility and Coyote Canyon Test Area. He provided photos of an alleged UFO flying near Coyote Canyon at Kirtland Air Force Base.[citation needed]
After concluding that aliens were in fact active on Earth, Bennewitz detailed his assertions to the Aerial Phenomena Research Organization, who regarded him as a deluded paranoid.[citation needed] He then wrote to Air Force Sergeant Richard C. Doty in October 1980 and reported his various claims. Realising that Bennewitz had, as James Mosely writes, "grossly misinterpreted" the information from some "supposedly secure communications systems," Kirtland AFB authorities sent Doty to investigate. A few days after receiving his letter, Doty and Air Force scientist Jerry Miller interviewed Bennewitz at his home. He showed them his elaborate equipment setup designed to photograph, film and otherwise monitor the supposed UFOs.
One of the curiosities of the case is that Bennewitz seems to have photographed some genuinely unexplained aerial phenomena: Clark cites an Air Force memorandum released via the Freedom of Information Act, which reports, "after analyzing the data collected by Dr. BENNEWITZ, Mr. MILLER related the evidence clearly shows some type of unidentified aerial objects were caught on film; however, no conclusion could be made whether these objects pose a threat to the Manzano/Coyote Canyon areas." (Clark 1998, 146)
Bennewitz was invited to Kirtland AFB on November 10, 1980, to present his findings to a small conference of Air Force officers and scientists. One week later, writes Clark, Air Force officials told Bennewitz they would not be investigating his evidence any further.
