Unable to Download Files Using (IE) Internet Explorer

Cannot download files from Internet Explorer(IE)? I recently tried to download a file from rapidshare from Internet explorer suddenly a message showed saying that "Internet Explorer cannot download filename from this particular web server"
though i was able to download the file using mozilla firefox and download manager such as "star downloader " and i tried to reinstall internet explorer in the control panel add and remove windows components but nothing helped and after a brief search on the google solution for it on one of the site and i came to know that the culprite was damaged index.dat file we have to delete the file and restart the computer below are the steps:-

  • Open Internet Explorere
  • Click on Tools, Click on Internet Options
  • On the General tab under Temporary Internet Files, click on Delete Files
  • Click Ok when it asks if you want to delete the files
  • Under the History section on the General tab, click Clear History, then click Ok
  • Close Internet Explorer
  • Log off the current user and Log onto another user account such as Administrator
  • Click on Start, Run
  • Type CMD and Press Enter to open a command prompt
  • Change directories to the Temporary Internet Files directory by typing the following command, substituting the correct drive letter and the word username with the correct user in Windows XP.

  • cd c:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5
  • Example: cd c:\Documents and Settings\Mark\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5

  • type del index.dat and press Enter
  • Type Exit and press Enter to close the command prompt
  • Restart your computer
Now after restarting the system and try to download any file from the web now problem should be solved and file should start downloading.
